Promoting Music Education at Home
- Whistle While You Work - The Seven Dwarfs were right! Whether you whistle, sing, or dance, music makes your chores go smoother and faster. The tune or the quality of the music doesn't matter. Music history is full of "working" songs that can be used at home with children of all ages. Whether it's "I've Been Working On the Railroad" or a "Clean Up, Clean Up" from the Barney show, there is a song to go with your chores.
- Sing A Re-Cap of Your Day - Bedtime isn't just for lullabies. Children love to hear the stories of their lives in song. As you tuck your child in to bed, sing through the events of the day. Don't worry about trying to make the story rhyme or a beautiful melody. Just sing.
- Use What You Have - Instruments can be made from materials around the house. Pots and pans can be beat with wooden spoons for drums, rubber bands around small boxes can be strummed, and containers with lids can be filled to make shakers. All of these can be homemade instruments for children and their families to keep the beat.
